Englischer Titel:
Seminar in Applied Statistics (Simulation and Deception in Statistics)

ABSTRACT

One aim of the seminar is to outline that by the use of certain mathematical methods (stochastic simulation, Boot strap and Jackknife methods etc.) the scope of empirical observation can be enlarged considerably. On the other hand we will demonstrate that by incorrect or misleading application of statistical methods, used in an exploratory as well as confirmatory manner, biased or even completely false conclusions may result. The seminar intends to help avoiding such pitfalls in statistical reasoning and will thus contribute to cope with common prejudices towards statistical statements.
