ABSTRACT

This thesis focuses on the topics of Agent Technology and Distance Education and their combination.

Firstly, the main aspects of Agents and Distance Education are described. With respect to agents this thesis discusses fundamental information in the areas of definitions, application areas, historical development, agent systems and platforms, agent-oriented software engineering, agent languages, etc.

Secondly, the thesis treats important aspects of Distance Education (DE). Different learning models, advantages and disadvantages, important elements, development and realization of DE-Courses, etc. are covered herein. In addition Distance Education courses developed and delivered in the context of a project (PIAF – Projekt Informatik als Fernstudium) are mentioned. Purposely developed learning material, Learning arrangements (Settings), the WeLearn learning platform and pilot studies are presented thereby.

This thesis specifically addresses the topic of applying Agents in the field of Distance Education based on the aforementioned experiences. Firstly, a process model developed for Distance Education courses is presented, in which the necessary process steps and tasks of course development, course realization and course evaluation were modeled and described. The role of agents and their possible tasks are also presented in this process model.

Secondly, an agent-oriented knowledge platform (KNOWPAG) developed in the context of this thesis is presented. Its elements, like an XML schemata (definition of the structure and the type of meta data), a prototype of a web-interface and, foremost, different types of agents and agent protocols are presented in detail thereby. The XML schemata specifies the structure of metadata for DE-courses. Within this not only the structure, but also the data types and predefined values are defined. All components (databases, agent protocols, agents, etc.) are based on this XML schema. Therefore misinterpretations or incompatibilities are excluded. Several sample agents are presented in this context upon which the agent life cycle, the communication between agents and the exchange and retrieving of data are demonstrated and explained in general. Finally agents for searching DE-courses are presented which work based on the elements of KNOWPAG.
