Teleworking

What makes a job suitable for teleworking?

It must be capable of being carried out without continuous face-to face contact with people.

It should be possible to organise the essential face-to-face contact into periodic meetings - for instance, all taking place during one day per week at the employer´s premises. Jobs which currently involve face-to-face meetings on a daily basis con often be rearranged to fit the working pattern which involves spending at least part of the week at home.

It must be capable of being managed by results - not necessarily by a crude counting of the number of keystrokes executed, or sales made, but perhaps by the achievement of mutually-agreed targets such as deadlines on short projects, or progress "milestones" on longer ones. Experience suggests that teleworkers need short-term goals to work towards.

Where access to information is necessary on a daily basis, it must be information which can be retrieved remotely, either by telephone enquiry or electronically, with a remote terminal or modem link to appropriate database.

If the work is highly time-sensitive, it must be capable of being electronically or be based within hand-delivery distance of the end-user.
